The U.S. Federal Reserve decided to leave interest rates unchanged at 3.50% to 3.75%, maintaining its current monetary policy despite growing speculation that another rate hike could be announced.
The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) voted 9-3 in favor of holding the federal funds rate steady. The decision followed increased uncertainty surrounding inflation and geopolitical tensions, with market expectations for a 25-basis-point rate hike briefly climbing to 35%, according to CME FedWatch, before declining ahead of the announcement.
In its official statement, the Fed said the U.S. economy continues to expand at a solid pace, supported by strong productivity growth and business investment. However, policymakers acknowledged that inflation remains above the central bank's 2% target, citing higher energy prices and supply-side disruptions linked in part to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Crypto Markets Show Limited Reaction
Cryptocurrency markets remained relatively stable following the Fed's decision, suggesting investors had largely priced in the outcome.
Bitcoin traded near $64,250, gaining around 1% during the day, while Ethereum also rose approximately 1% to $1,915.
Among the largest digital assets, XRP delivered the strongest performance, climbing nearly 3% to around $1.08 shortly after the announcement.
The muted reaction indicates that investors viewed the Fed's decision as largely expected, with attention now shifting toward future inflation data and upcoming monetary policy meetings.
Analysts See a Mixed Outlook
Market analysts believe the central bank is attempting to balance slowing inflation with persistent geopolitical and economic risks.
Iggy Ioppe, Chief Investment Officer at Theo, argued that improving inflation data alone was not enough to justify a more accommodative stance.
Ioppe also noted that while institutional inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs have resumed, continued geopolitical uncertainty has limited the potential for a sustained rally across the crypto market.
Focus Turns to September
Several analysts suggested that the Fed's latest decision preserves flexibility rather than signaling a major policy shift.
Stephen Coltman, Head of Macro at 21Shares, described the announcement as a relief for investors, but cautioned that September's meeting could become significantly more challenging if inflation fails to continue easing.
Similarly, Can-Luca Köymen, Investment Strategist at Sygnum Bank, said the decision demonstrates that policymakers prefer to remain cautious.
The latest decision leaves financial markets awaiting the next round of inflation, employment, and economic growth data, all of which are expected to play a crucial role in determining whether the Federal Reserve resumes tightening later this year. Until then, cryptocurrency investors are likely to remain focused on both macroeconomic developments and geopolitical events, which continue to influence sentiment across digital asset markets.
