Public Unrest Grows as Economic Pressure Mounts

Iran is witnessing a sharp rise in stablecoin usage as its national currency, the rial, continues a steep decline. This week alone, the rial briefly crashed to 1.42 million per US dollar before stabilizing slightly around 1.38 million, deepening an economic crisis that has already erased household savings and driven up the cost of essentials.

Official data shows inflation hit 42.2% year over year in December, while food prices jumped 72% and health-related costs surged 50%. The rapid deterioration has intensified public anger and renewed fears of hyperinflation.

The currency collapse has spilled into the streets. Protests have spread across Tehran and other major cities, with shopkeepers near the Grand Bazaar shuttering their businesses in protest. Online videos show crowds chanting against the ruling elite, though authorities have questioned the timing and authenticity of some footage.

President Masoud Pezeshkian has acknowledged the unrest, calling the grievances “legitimate economic concerns” and ordering the interior minister to engage directly with protest leaders. At the same time, Parliament Speaker Mohammed Bagher Qalibaf urged urgent action to defend the rial, while accusing foreign adversaries of exploiting the turmoil.

Stablecoins Emerge as a Financial Lifeline

As confidence in the rial collapses, Iranians are rapidly turning to cryptocurrencies-especially US dollar-pegged stablecoins-to preserve purchasing power. Many users say the shift is purely defensive, aimed at protecting savings from rapid devaluation rather than speculation.

This pattern is familiar in sanctioned economies where access to traditional banking is constrained. Blockchain analysts have long tracked how crypto adoption accelerates during currency crises, particularly when citizens seek borderless, censorship-resistant alternatives.

Dollar-backed stablecoins are especially attractive in Iran, offering price stability during periods of extreme volatility and functioning as a practical hedge against repeated devaluation cycles.

Iran’s Broader Engagement With Digital Assets

The trend also aligns with Iran’s growing institutional engagement with digital assets. Previous reports indicate that the country’s Ministry of Defense Export Center has explored accepting digital assets for overseas transactions, particularly where traditional payment rails are blocked.

Data from Chainalysis shows that sanctioned countries received more than $16 billion in digital assets in a single year, underscoring how crypto has become a tool for cross-border value transfer under economic pressure.

Sanctions, Resignations, and Rising Geopolitical Risk

The crisis deepened further this week when Central Bank Governor Mohammed Reza Farzin resigned, according to state media. His departure comes amid renewed United Nations sanctions in 2025 tied to Iran’s nuclear program, which have further restricted access to global markets and accelerated capital flight.

Authorities have also announced temporary shutdowns across Tehran and other provinces, citing energy shortages and cold weather. Residents, however, claim that crypto mining operations linked to powerful interests continue operating, fueling frustration over uneven enforcement.

Geopolitical tensions remain elevated. The United States has warned Iran against rebuilding nuclear or missile capabilities, with President Donald Trump stating Washington would act again if Iran moved forward-while still leaving room for a negotiated settlement.

A Familiar Crisis, a Digital Response

As inflation, sanctions, and political pressure converge, stablecoins are becoming a quiet but powerful coping mechanism for ordinary Iranians. While not a solution to the country’s structural economic problems, their growing use highlights how digital assets increasingly fill the gaps left by collapsing currencies and restricted financial systems.
