ChatGPT Reaches Historic User Milestone
According to new data from Sensor Tower, ChatGPT surpassed 1 billion global monthly active users in May, becoming the fastest application in history to reach the milestone.
The achievement comes just three years after the platform's launch, allowing OpenAI's chatbot to reach the billion-user mark faster than major technology platforms such as Google Maps, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.
The milestone highlights the extraordinary pace at which generative AI has entered mainstream adoption, transforming from a niche technology into a tool used daily by hundreds of millions of people worldwide.
For OpenAI, the achievement further strengthens its position as the dominant player in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence industry.
Growth Accelerates After Signs of Saturation
The latest figures are particularly notable because ChatGPT appeared to be slowing down only a few months ago.
Between August and November 2025, monthly active users increased by just 6%, reaching approximately 810 million users. The slowdown sparked concerns that ChatGPT's growth was approaching saturation.

Claude's overall user base remains far smaller than ChatGPT's, with approximately 56 million monthly active users globally.
However, its growth rate has been significantly faster.
Over the past year, Claude's monthly active users increased by roughly 640%, compared with ChatGPT's growth rate of 62%.
Users Aren’t Leaving - They’re Using Both
Despite Claude's rapid expansion, the data does not indicate a mass migration away from ChatGPT.
Instead, users appear increasingly comfortable using multiple AI assistants depending on their needs.
This trend reflects a broader shift within the AI industry, where consumers are comparing models based on writing quality, coding performance, reasoning abilities, and personalization features.
