J.P. Morgan Asset Management has included Bitcoin in its long-term investment forecasts for the first time, projecting that the cryptocurrency could outperform traditional assets over the next decade.
In its 2027 Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions, released October 19, the investment firm estimated that Bitcoin could generate a 10% compound annual return over the next 10 to 15 years.
The projection exceeds JPMorgan's expectations for US large-cap stocks, gold and traditional diversified portfolios.
The report marks the 31st annual edition of JPMorgan's long-term investment outlook and represents a significant acknowledgment of Bitcoin within institutional financial research.
However, the firm emphasized that its projections are assumptions rather than guaranteed investment outcomes.
Bitcoin Expected to Beat Stocks and Gold
JPMorgan's forecasts place Bitcoin ahead of several major traditional investment categories over the coming decade.
The firm projects annualized returns of 7.5% for US large-cap equities, 5.5% for gold and 7% for a traditional portfolio consisting of 60% stocks and 40% bonds.
These estimates suggest that Bitcoin could deliver stronger long-term growth, although its potential returns come with considerably greater risk.
The report also estimates Bitcoin's arithmetic average annual return at 20.9%, substantially higher than its compound annual return.
The difference reflects how large price fluctuations can reduce the growth investors actually experience over time.
High Volatility Remains a Major Concern
Despite its optimistic return projection, JPMorgan remains cautious about Bitcoin's suitability for traditional investment portfolios.
The firm estimates Bitcoin's annualized volatility at approximately 55%, compared with roughly 17% for gold.
Because Bitcoin's correlations with other assets remain unstable, JPMorgan has not incorporated it into its primary portfolio modeling framework.
Instead, the investment manager developed a separate model comparing Bitcoin with a smaller selection of assets.
JPMorgan also questioned the argument that currency debasement will automatically drive substantial investment into cryptocurrencies, describing that assumption as overly optimistic.
Bitwise Says Bitcoin Forecast May Be Conservative
The report attracted attention from cryptocurrency investment professionals, including Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan.
Hougan welcomed Bitcoin's inclusion in JPMorgan's long-term forecasts, interpreting the decision as another indication of growing institutional recognition.
However, he argued that JPMorgan's 55% volatility assumption could overstate Bitcoin's future price fluctuations.
According to Hougan, a lower volatility estimate could support a higher compound return projection.
Bitwise manages cryptocurrency investment products, giving the company a commercial interest in Bitcoin's long-term performance.
The disagreement highlights the uncertainty surrounding forecasts for an asset with a relatively short trading history.

Bitcoin ETFs Record Strong Institutional Inflows
JPMorgan's forecast arrives alongside renewed activity in US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds.
On October 19, the funds reportedly attracted approximately $526.7 million in net inflows, their strongest daily performance since September 22.
BlackRock's IBIT recorded roughly $665.2 million in inflows, helping offset withdrawals from competing products.
The activity reduced October's cumulative Bitcoin ETF net outflows to approximately $88 million.
Meanwhile, Bitcoin traded around $82,000, while US 10-year Treasury yields remained above 5%.
JPMorgan has also expanded its blockchain involvement through JPM Coin's deployment on Ethereum and participation in tokenized financial asset initiatives.
Although the bank expects Bitcoin to outperform traditional investments, its decision to exclude the cryptocurrency from core portfolio models demonstrates continued caution.
The 10% annual return forecast represents a notable institutional milestone, but Bitcoin's volatility remains central to the investment debate.
