Kenya has officially begun migrating its national education records to the Avalanche blockchain, marking one of the largest blockchain deployments for public education records in Africa.

According to Ava Labs, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) is now using Avalanche's C-Chain to store and verify academic credentials. The initiative enables employers, universities, and graduates to authenticate certificates within seconds, replacing a manual process that often took weeks or even months.

Previously, verifying academic qualifications required requests through government portals or paper documentation. Individual certificate checks could take up to one month, while bulk verification for employers sometimes stretched to six months.

More Than 15 Million Records Already On-Chain

KNEC has already migrated more than 15 million academic records to the Avalanche blockchain, with plans to expand the database to approximately 35 million records.

The digital archive includes records covering:

  • KCPE (Grade 8) examinations
  • KCSE (Grade 12) certificates
  • Advanced diploma qualifications
  • Teaching certification records
KNEC Chief Executive Officer Dr. David Njengere confirmed the new system allows students to: "Securely access, download and verify their KCSE certificates online."

Students who completed the 2025 KCSE examinations, involving nearly one million candidates, will receive their certificates exclusively through the new digital verification platform.

The project is powered by LegitDoc, a Kenyan technology company responsible for implementing the blockchain-based credential system.

Blockchain Helps Combat Certificate Fraud

Beyond improving efficiency, the migration is designed to reduce academic fraud.

Under the previous system, forged certificates were a persistent challenge. Even QR codes printed on physical diplomas could be copied or redirected through fraudulent websites that mimicked official government databases.

With blockchain technology, every academic credential becomes an immutable digital record that cannot be altered after publication.

Employers, educational institutions, and government agencies can instantly verify whether a certificate is authentic through the official verification portal, significantly reducing the risk of forged qualifications entering the workforce.

Avalanche Expands Government Adoption

Kenya joins a growing list of governments adopting Avalanche for public-sector record management.

The LegitDoc platform has previously been deployed in India's Dantewada district, where more than 700,000 land records were placed on-chain, reducing verification times from several weeks to less than a single day.

Avalanche has also supported other large-scale government initiatives, including:

  • California DMV's blockchain project covering approximately 42 million vehicle titles
  • Bergen County, New Jersey's property deed digitization
  • Japan's Progmat tokenized securities platform, valued at more than $3 billion

The network has also continued expanding within decentralized finance through projects such as Aave, highlighting Avalanche's ability to support both public-sector infrastructure and commercial blockchain applications.

Officials cited low transaction costs, fast processing speeds, and scalability as key reasons for selecting Avalanche. The Kenyan database now includes academic records dating back to 1989, creating a permanent digital archive for decades of educational history.

Despite the milestone, Avalanche's native token (AVAX) has continued facing market pressure. As of August 3, 2026, AVAX traded at approximately $6.52, representing a decline of roughly 70% compared with the previous year.

The KNEC initiative nevertheless demonstrates that real-world blockchain adoption continues to expand, even during periods of weaker cryptocurrency market performance.
