Zcash (ZEC) surged above $1,000 on Friday, reaching its strongest price level in nearly a decade as momentum around the privacy-focused cryptocurrency continued to accelerate.
ZEC touched an intraday high of approximately $1,029 on Binance before retreating toward $984, representing a gain of roughly 20% over 24 hours. The move extended a rally that began around $500 just one month earlier.
The surge pushed Zcash's market capitalization toward $17 billion, allowing ZEC to briefly overtake Dogecoin and enter the ten largest cryptocurrencies by market value, according to CoinMarketCap data.
The breakout also caught bearish traders heavily positioned against the token, triggering a wave of forced liquidations that added further momentum to the rally.
Short Squeeze Accelerates ZEC Rally
Approximately $34.5 million in ZEC short positions were liquidated as the cryptocurrency broke through the psychologically important $1,000 level, according to CoinGlass.
Overall ZEC liquidations reached approximately $36.6 million.
When leveraged short positions are liquidated, traders are forced to close bearish bets as prices move against them. This can create additional buying pressure and accelerate an already-rising market, producing what is commonly known as a short squeeze.
The latest move builds on an extraordinary period for Zcash. The cryptocurrency has gained approximately 94% over the past month and more than 2,300% over the past year, making it one of the strongest-performing major crypto assets during that period.
Privacy and ETF Launch Support Momentum
Launched in 2016, Zcash was developed by cryptographer Zooko Wilcox and a team of researchers as a cryptocurrency offering stronger transaction privacy than conventional public blockchains.
Unlike Bitcoin and Ethereum, where transaction information is publicly visible by default, Zcash offers shielded transactions that use zero-knowledge cryptography to protect information about participants and transaction amounts while still allowing the network to verify that transfers are valid.
Institutional accessibility has also increased recently.
Grayscale's Zcash ETF began trading on NYSE Arca under the ticker ZCSH on August 25, allowing brokerage investors to gain exposure to ZEC without directly managing cryptocurrency wallets.
The launch has added another catalyst to a rally that had already pushed Zcash to an eight-year high during August.
Technical Indicators Show Strong but Overheated Market
Despite the bullish momentum, several technical indicators suggest ZEC may be entering overheated territory.
The token's Relative Strength Index stood around 78.6, comfortably above the 70 level commonly interpreted by traders as indicating overbought market conditions.
At the same time, the 50-day moving average remained above the 200-day moving average, maintaining a longer-term bullish technical structure.
Zcash's Average Directional Index stood around 48, significantly above the 25 level generally associated with an established trend. Positive momentum also remained stronger than negative momentum, suggesting buyers were still controlling the market despite elevated prices.
If ZEC experiences a significant pullback, the reported retracement levels around $892.94 and $808.63 could emerge as potential areas of support.
Bitcoin Falls Back Below $80,000
Zcash's rally initially coincided with a broader crypto recovery driven by shifting expectations around Federal Reserve policy.
Bitcoin reclaimed $80,000 on Thursday after Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller indicated that he could support holding interest rates steady, helping trigger more than $415 million in short liquidations across crypto.
That momentum reversed Friday after the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 162,000 new US jobs in August, significantly above the consensus estimate of approximately 56,000. Unemployment remained unchanged at 4.1%.
The stronger labor market prompted traders to increase expectations that the Federal Reserve could raise rates during its September 15–16 meeting, sending Bitcoin back below $80,000.
Zcash, however, continued dramatically outperforming the broader market.
Attention now turns toward the August Consumer Price Index report, expected next Friday, which could further influence expectations surrounding the Fed's next move.
For ZEC, the immediate question is whether its powerful combination of privacy demand, ETF accessibility and short-squeeze momentum can sustain the breakout after the cryptocurrency's rapid move above $1,000.
