Some of the biggest names in cryptocurrency and traditional finance have joined forces to launch the Bitcoin Security Consortium, a new initiative dedicated to supporting the long-term security of the Bitcoin network.
The founding members include Strategy, BlackRock, Coinbase, Galaxy, Fidelity Digital Assets, Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, Block, and Blockstream. Together, the organizations represent a broad cross-section of the Bitcoin ecosystem, including asset managers, exchanges, custodians, infrastructure providers, and payment companies.
According to the announcement, consortium members have collectively pledged $15 million over the next three years to fund Bitcoin developers, security researchers, and technical initiatives that strengthen the network.
The group's daily operations will be coordinated on a voluntary basis by Brink Executive Director Mike Schmidt, while each participating company will independently decide which developers and organizations receive its financial support.

Preparing Bitcoin for the Quantum Era
The consortium's first major priority will be post-quantum cryptography, reflecting growing concerns that future quantum computers could eventually threaten the cryptographic systems protecting Bitcoin and other digital assets.
Although experts generally believe practical quantum attacks remain several years away, consortium members emphasized that preparing well in advance is essential to maintaining Bitcoin's long-term security.
He added that supporting security research and encouraging informed public discussion represents a natural contribution from companies with significant long-term exposure to Bitcoin.
Importantly, the consortium stressed that it will not develop, govern, or control Bitcoin's protocol. Instead, protocol development will remain entirely in the hands of Bitcoin's decentralized open-source community, while the consortium focuses solely on funding research and technical development.
Quantum Security Efforts Accelerate
The launch reflects a broader industry-wide push to prepare for future advances in quantum computing. Earlier this week, Galaxy introduced its own Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative, committing up to $5 million in grants for developers building post-quantum cryptographic tools, alongside new research programs and an advisory council focused on emerging quantum risks.
Governments are also increasing investment in quantum preparedness. Last month, President Donald Trump signed two executive orders designed to accelerate the United States' quantum computing capabilities while requiring federal high-value systems to transition to post-quantum cryptography by the end of 2031.
Although the executive orders do not specifically reference Bitcoin, many industry participants believe the broader investment in post-quantum security will also benefit blockchain technology.
The Countdown to "Q-Day"
The cryptocurrency industry continues debating when quantum computers could realistically threaten existing encryption standards. In May, post-quantum cybersecurity company Project Eleven estimated that approximately 6.9 million bitcoins could eventually become vulnerable under certain attack scenarios if sufficient quantum computing power becomes available.
The company suggested that the arrival of a cryptographically capable quantum computer-often referred to as "Q-Day"-could occur as early as 2030, although estimates vary by several years depending on technological progress.
While most researchers agree that today's quantum computers are not yet capable of breaking Bitcoin's encryption, many believe the time to prepare is now rather than waiting until the technology matures.
By committing $15 million to long-term security research, the Bitcoin Security Consortium aims to ensure the world's largest cryptocurrency remains resilient against future technological threats, reinforcing confidence that the network can continue operating securely for decades to come.
